With its 100 for each base stats and Sketch, which means it gets all moves (besides Fundex signatures, note that) tentaquil is unpredictable. It can lead, support and boost with Shell Smash to get its stats to insane levels. Sadly, tentaquil's Bug typing hampers the usefulness of its Shell Smash sets with a Focus Sash; Stealth Rock gets rid of that item's use. Its Bug typing also means a glaring weakness to Fire, that makes tentaquil get KOd easily to attackers like Utsuho or Satan. Its typing doesn't really get it a lot of useful resistances either, besides that it massively walls Fighting (0.25). The Shell Smash tentaquil might be very powerful, but you have to bring it in at the right time to make use of it.

The classic tentalead set. With its 100 base Speed, it is the fastest Spore user out there (not counting Chuck Norris) and often manages to pull it off. While the foe is sleeping, tentaquil lays down its rocks and spikes. When tentaquil is done with his job, it U-Turns out of the battlefield. And it can always return and hit another time, too.

After a boost with Shell Smash, tentaquil's stats have been raised to insane levels. And since it gets all attacking moves besides Fundex signatures, it is impossible to counter this tentaquil. Once you have found out its moves you might stand a slim chance, but still. With an Adamant nature, Shell Smash boosts its Attack to a great 656, and its Speed to 598, which means it should outspeed anything besides Captain Falcon. Now Ice Burn and Freeze Shock have a charging turn with the release of Black 2 and White 2, tentaquil sadly can't abuse those moves anymore, but it still has over enough a movepool to use. Also note that the moves I put in the set are basically recommendations; you can run almost any powerful move on tentaquil you want. The presence of Yuugi might make you want to run a special move on the fourth slot, also; in that case you can better use a Lonely or Naughty Nature.

Checks and Counters
Like I mentioned in the overview, Fire attackers like Utsuho or Satan are tentaquil's main counters. Being immune to Spore helps a lot too, since that will reduce its effectiveness as lead, if you are facing a tentalead, that is. Ganon can be immune to Spore thanks to Insomnia, and can hit tentaquil hard with STAB Dark attacks. If tentaquil has already gotten a Shell Smash boost, Captain Falcon or priority are your best bets to defeat it; it will mercilessly outspeed you and do massive damage with one of its powerful moves otherwise. Yuugi can also easily switch in with her 180 base Defense and hit back to KO tentaquil.
